Staying Hydrated During A Heat Wave

Why We Need To Stay Hydrated

We are starting September with a heat wave.  Labor Day is a time to enjoy the end of the summer as we gather with friends and family outside.

It is important that during this Labor Day weekend  we stay hydrated.

Staying hydrated  is crucial for our emotional and physical wellbeing.

Fluid is lost during severe heat and through sweat, tears, vomiting, urine or diarrhea.

Dehydration can cause heat stroke, dizziness, confusion and fatigue.  Severe dehydration can lead to damaged kidneys, heart, and brain.  There are times when I have seen patients  with anxiety and psychosis due to dehydration.

Caffeine can increase the risk of dehydration.  Drink decaffeinated drinks and clear liquids.

If you plan on spending time in the heat, drink 1 cup (8 ounces) of water every 15–20 minutes.  On the average, people should drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day.

My favorite things to drink are:

1. Water with lemon

2. Watermelon juice (try blending in the juicer with ice)

3. Iced chamomile with a mint leaf and a teaspoon of honey

4. Cucumber and strawberry infused water

Don't forget your sunblock! Choose a non toxic option like

Sun Shield-Coconut SPF 280117959001662047826.jpg

Sun Shield Coconut SPF 28 is a mineral-based, broad-spectrum sunscreen with soothing Aloe and Vitamin E to help reduce signs of sun-induced irritation. Lightweight daily protection absorbs quickly for a smooth, clean and matte finish.
